At PUMA Karate, we are more concerned with the development and support of the student as person instead solely focusing on the teaching punches and kicks. As such every student works within the CHARACTER COUNTS! framework for character education as part of their ranking and testing.
PUMA Karate is the ONLY Ventura County school that is member of the Josephson Institute of Ethics Coalition. We feel this is of utmost importance to the students especially in todays uncertain world. We are much more than an after-school activity.
The nonprofit Josephson Institute administers the national office of CHARACTER COUNTS! (the Center for Youth Ethics). CHARACTER COUNTS! is the most widely implemented approach to character education, reaching millions of youth. CHARACTER COUNTS! is:

  • A framework based on basic values called the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.
  • Embraced by thousands of schools, communities, public agencies and nonprofit organizations for a simple reason – it works. These groups receive support and development from a national office, which offers training programs, free e-newsletters, resources and free consultation.
  • Nonprofit, not religious or political (though used by both secular and faith-based groups, and supported by public officials of both major parties).
  • Not a curriculum or add-on, but a powerful means to advance curricular and behavioral goals.

The Six Pillars of Character form the six core ethical values and foundation of all Josephson Institute programs and materials. A chapter of the Institute's Making Ethical Decisions booklet provides a more detailed discussion of the Six Pillars.

  • Trustworthiness. Be honest. Be loyal—stand by your family, friends and country. Don’t deceive, cheat or steal. Be reliable—do what you say you’ll do. Have the courage to do the right thing. Build a good reputation.
  • Respect. Treat others with respect; follow the Golden Rule. Be tolerant of differences. Use good manners, not bad language. Be considerate of the feelings of others. Don’t threaten, hit or hurt anyone. Deal peacefully with anger, insults and disagreements.
  • Responsibility. Do what you are supposed to do. Persevere: keep on trying! Always do your best. Exercise self-control. Be self-disciplined. Think before you act—consider the consequences. Be accountable for your choices.
  • Fairness. Play by the rules. Take turns and share. Don’t blame others carelessly. Listen to others. Don’t take advantage of others.
  • Caring. Be kind. Be compassionate. Show you care. Express gratitude. Forgive others. Help people in need.
  • Citizenship. Do your share to make your school and community better. Cooperate. Stay informed; vote. Get involved in community affairs. Be a good neighbor. Obey laws and rules. Respect authority. Protect the environment.

We encourage you to follow the TEAM strategy at home. It is the same one we will employ at school.

  • Teach children that their character counts.
  • Enforce the Six Pillars of Character.
  • Advocate character.
  • Model good behavior.

We also encourage you to offer opportunities for students to act in accordance with these values and to experience them in a meaningful way to help shape their character and strengthen their abilities as learners.
